Custer Road Construction: Businesses Remain Accessible During Major Lakewood Road Project

Access: Local businesses remain open and accessible via designated vehicle crossings and signage (with local access via Grange and Burgess).
Timeline: Construction started on August 12, 2026, and is anticipated to wrap up around September 30, 2026

The City of Lakewood is reconstructing Custer Road between Bridgeport Way West and 75th Street West, addressing a heavily traveled roadway that had deteriorated to the point where more extensive reconstruction was needed. The project is intended to improve the condition, safety and long-term reliability of this important Lakewood corridor.

During construction, Custer Road is closed to through traffic in the active construction area. Drivers traveling between Bridgeport Way and 75th Street should expect detours, changing traffic patterns and occasional delays. Customers visiting businesses along Custer Road may need to approach from a different direction or follow posted local-access routes.

Businesses along Custer Road remain open during construction. The City of Lakewood has been working with businesses and the contractor to maintain access whenever possible, while also providing information to help customers understand how to reach businesses affected by the construction.

The City is also helping promote businesses along the corridor through its Custer Road Business Highlights and other public outreach efforts. This is particularly important because construction can create the impression that businesses are inaccessible or closed, even when they continue operating normally.

Once completed, the Custer Road project will provide significant improvements to the area, including reconstructed pavement, sidewalks and curbs, street lighting, storm drainage improvements and a two-way center left-turn lane. These improvements should ultimately provide safer and easier access for businesses, customers, pedestrians and motorists.

While construction may require a little extra patience and planning, businesses between 75th Street West and Bridgeport Way remain accessible. Residents are encouraged to continue supporting these Lakewood businesses throughout the construction period.
